We stick to audio power amplification on this forum. There are separate forums for Chip Amplifiers and pre-amplification, mixers consumer and professional.
A forum dedicated to DIY chip amplifiers, the LM3875, LM3886, LM4780 including the TDA9293 and TDA7294, etc
Microvolts, millivolts and general low voltage amplification, including tone controls, equalisation, signal and impedance matching. Power amplification is not covered here, please see forum list.
High powered amplifier inspired by Elektor’s Q-Watt and forum for those expanding on results, performance and their own builds. Interesting subject because of the power transistors MG6330-R / MG9410-R and National Semiconductor / TI LME49811 which is used in the input stage, with the ability to drive a 500W 8 Ohm output stage. Sadly the LME49811 is now end of life without any equivalent. As a side-note for those that have built these amplifiers let us know of any workaround you took if you could not get the chip but you had the boards.
Many DIYer circles are having great fun building their own multi-layered boards with high spec DACs. Many of these circuits are for professional usage and cost a lot less than over the counter.
South Africa with it’s “boer maak ‘n plan” mentality” has scores of DIYer and professionals reverse engineering products to suite their needs. Many musicians have made their mark because of their unique sound. Analalog and digital electronics is changing our world of music.
What is sound and stage without lighting. This avenue has just opened with the cheap DMX controller. Strangely enough internet searches show very little with regard to the mechatronics used. Nice platform to boast about your achievements.
Radio tubes were phased out in the 60s weren’t they? As a matter of fact, not! Many guitarists prefer the tube sound. Along with the return and popularity of vinyl many enthusiasts are opting for the tube sound. Are they really better or just pie in the sky?
The audio DIY community is obsessed with this subject. Of course we have the nay-sayers but the reality is if used in capable hands they are worth their weight in gold. Here you can add your semiconductor or tube project.
Some tips and tricks, equipment, process and end product. Look under Manufacturers, Distributors and Resellers as well to get companies that specialise in this. Sometimes it is cheaper for mass production.
Whether for professional use or your home there’s a lot of information out there which can always come in use. An oft asked question is making a loudspeaker enclosure of non standard width or depth. Another is getting the Bose 901 design.
Thanks to Bothead’s request we have added a guitar amplifier enthusiasts forum here. Bothead, I pray that you add some input 🙂 For the rest, South Africa has some pretty decent local music, actually world class. We know that there’s a whole bunch of people building and fixing guitar amplifiers. This is for you.
